Well, heck, it's time to say Rabbit Rabbit for good luck in December. This time last year I was on a cruise on the Queen Mary 2. I've said Rabbit Rabbit each and every first of the month, but still I'm on dry land this December first. Heck.

That's me up there on our balcony, leaving New York on November 30, 2009. I'm writing this on my birthday, November 30, 2010.

One of the things I like about Christmas is watching the movie A Christmas Story. I don't seem to get tired of it. Of course, I can drop in and out of it and not pay complete attention to it. That Ralphie. Poor little guy in his pink rabbit pj's. Sad.

I may be land locked today, but I'm thinkin' about last year.

I'm gonna be honest and admit that I have absolutely no idea which island this is. We got off the boat and visited five islands, took tours, etc. Had a great time. But --- if you've seen one of these islands, you've pretty much seen them all. Beautiful, and I'd do it again. Sigh. But it really does all run together as far as the islands go.

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm sayin' Rabbit Rabbit for luck anyway. Even if I don't get a cruise this year.

Poe Evermore

Once again the family made the trip to Mt. Hope Estate and Winery to see and hear the Poe Festival. That's Actonbell on the left, me standing up in my used-once-a-year Poe shirt, husband Niks, and 3D in the green sweater. Acton's husband Ekim is behind the camera. Can't see him. Can you?

Poe Evermore is a great treat. We generally also enjoy a meal in the tavern on the estate grounds.

A good time was had by all. Well. Maybe not by the prisoner of The Pit and the Pendulum. Hrmpf. That whiner.

The creepy writer himself always appears and has a good time, by a deeply depressed man's standards anyway. He's been dead about 140 years or so. Doesn't look that bad really.

They decorate the grounds for this occasion.

Tryin' to look all scary and stuff.

The old mansion is scary enough in itself.

Was once a beautiful place, and still is a little bit.

We usually go for a dinner with Poe, and for the performance at midnight which is super creepy and fun. This time we went for lunch and an early show, and thereby saw stuff I had never noticed before like this pretty bench.

On balance, I think we'll probably stick to daylight after this. Once you're inside the mansion for the different literary sketches, you can't tell if it's day or night. And the drive to and from the estate is easier and safer.

This time different actors performed The Pit and the Pendulum, The Mask of the Red Death, Hop-Frog, which I had never even heard of, and of course, The Raven. They do different poems and short stories every year.

So I grabbed this meme from Thom's Monday Mayhem.

1. What animal in your opinion is the stupidest animal alive?

Humans. Next would be jelly fish ‘cause they don’t have a brain. But really, I’ll go with the Dodo. They sound really dumb.

2. What person in the news or spotlight makes you wonder how they got so far?

So many dumb bunnies out there, so little space. Paris Hilton comes to mind, since she seems to be missing hers.

3. If you could make up a new law and be in charge of arresting law breakers, what would that law be?

It would be illegal to show butt-crack. The law would require that anyone showing butt-crack would have to wear high-waisted jeans while picking up trash by the side of the road. It would be embarrassing for them to hide their butts in public that way.

4. Name something of the color blue that you despise.

A blue mood. Next on the list is blue jeans with butt-crack showing.

5. If you were on your way somewhere and were running late and witnessed an accident, what would you do?

Dial 911. Unless I really didn’t want to go where I was going –like the dentist or whatever. Then I would stop to help, and grab the excuse to miss the appointment. Like I could help anyway.

6. How tall is too tall and how short is too short in your opinion?

Jones is too tall, and all jockeys are too short. (I imagine some are too tight as well.)

7. What hair color and/eye color would you not want in someone you were planning on having children with?

Green hair and/or orange eyes. You just know those would be dominant traits.

8. What hour of the day has the worst drivers?

Happy hour. It also has the happiest drivers. It's a trade off.

9. Are you following the Stanley Cup Finals?

Stanley found his cup finally? I had not been informed that he lost it. I gather he plays a sport.

10. If you wanted to eat lunch at the zoo and all they served were animal parts, would you eat them?

You mean like leg of lamb? You betcha. Frog legs? Yum. I like the hippos too. I just can't eat a whole one by myself.

11. Would you give, and if so how much, money to a 25 year old man holding a sign at an intersection that asks for money?

The intersection asks for money? I would never give money to an intersection. I might give a buck or two to a good-looking 25 year-old man. What's he look like? No green hair or orange eyes I hope.

12. What do you do with emails that tell you to forward them on to 10 other people or something will happen to you?

Send them back to the person who sent them to me. Ten times. So far, so good. Of course there was that one time when a pelican sh*t on my head. But I figure that was just a coincidence. Then there was that snapping turtle that bit my big toe...I'm wondering about that one. I mean, how did that turtle get in my shoe? In the house? In the closet? Upstairs??? Maybe I should forward those messages. Any volunteers to receive those messages? You guys. I didn't think so.

So, it's October again. We really should get some new months. I mean, really. It's the same old 12 months over and over and over. Can't we do better than that? We're Americans! Heck. We oughta be able to produce a new month now and then.

A Day at the Races

You know you live in hicksville when you spend the day at the goat races.

Two friends and I did just that today. The Falsmouth PA Goat Races is a hoot and a half. First a local band played, then of course there was The Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Blessing of the Goats. Naturally I was touched by it all. Especially the blessing. I'm such a sentimental type. uh huh.

Then came the goat parade. They dress these goats in lovely outfits. This little lady was too proud to actually parade. That diva.

The goat with us won the Best Dressed Award. She shared it with one other goat but I've forgotten which one that was. Maybe this one below:

He and his owner/handler were pirates of course. Cute. Come to think of it, this dwarf goat is a female, and pregnant.

You could buy raffle tickets too. If you got lucky and your ticket won, then, well, you won yourself a goat. My friends wanted to do that, but since I was driving, and I told them they'd have to walk their prize home, they gave up on that.

I have to admit that the kids were flat-out adorable. This one is as small as a kitten.

But, ya know, they do grow up to be GOATS. Not the kid-kid, but the goat kid. The kid-kid will grow up to be a woman. That's a good thing. Mostly.

The races themselves were the funniest thing. Some goats ran like hell and their handlers fell and were drug down the track and across the finish line on their bellies. I thought it was funny. Maybe the dragees didn't think so. Quite a few goats had the opposite problem. The owner had to drag the goat. One goat bleated and complained and dug her hooves into the track the entire length of the race. We laughed so hard we cried.

There were other things goin' on too. Stick-goat obstacle races, etc. If you hadn't made your own stick-goat, there were rentals available. I'm not kidding. Well, I'm kidding (or lying) about the rental part. They'd lend you a stick-goat. Real generous like.

After we tired (I know you're surprised) of all the goat-going-on's we drove through the woods to the town of Columbia PA.

There we noticed that something big was happening. Crowds of people. Walking. Running. All going to see the grand attraction: The 500-ton generators, which are 70 feet high and 12.5 feet in diameter, being delivered for Three Mile Island Unit 1. That's right folks. We live downwind of TMI.

Anyhoo, these things are being transported over land on a huge carrier that moves 2.5 mph. I don't know why anyone would have to run to catch something going 2.5 mph.

My friends and I are too sophisticated to stare at such stuff, so we just minded our own business: going to the antique store there.

Next year we're going to one of Mule Jumping events in either Arkansas or Missouri. Naturally that will be an over-night trip. Do I know how to live or what?

There are so many ~~damn~~ darn rabbits in our yard this year, that they are actually fighting for space.

They eat everything. One of them is eating at the bottom of the clematis. That rabbit. Never had that happen before. This is what a year without a real winter does.

An update on the clematis. It looks good even though that rabbit keeps after it.

Our Clematis is a beautiful thing, year after year. It's not in full bloom yet. It's loaded with buds which will open in the next two days. Everyone's yard is great this year. We've had so much, TOO much rain, but the plants love it.

Graduations are being held everywhere these days. Tomorrow our twin granddaughters will graduate from the same high school that our four children did. Unbelievable. They were just born yesterday. In September they will go off to the same University.

Our step granddaughter Deva will graduate tomorrow from Bennington College in Vermont.

We are very, very lucky. These girls are three bright and good people.

Congratulations to all graduates. It may feel like an end, but it's a beginning. But then, every end is a beginning of something.

Didcha catch'em and put'em in a jar when you were a kid? I did. I didn't keep them a long time. Just watched them and then let them go 'cause I wanted them to live to fly around. I shouldn't have disturbed them in the first place. I was a bit of a brat. Big surprise, huh?

If you don't have fireflies where you live, you're missing something lovely and exciting. I never tire of seeing them.

Memorial Day

The weekend is here. A weekend of sales, picnics, fun and games.

I have no objection to any of those. And I am almost a pacifist. Almost. Not quite. So I'm not a fan of things military.

I remember when I was a kid that if there was a man on the street anywhere, he was in uniform. My father was in the navy, and he is buried in a military cemetery. (He was not killed during the war.) I just noticed that I wrote "the war." That's WWII. Young as I was, that war made a big impression on me.

I hope you have a great weekend. There's nothing wrong with having fun. But, if you have a minute, do think of those men and women who gave their lives in defense of The United States of America. I don't happen to agree with some of the wars we have fought since WWII, but IMHO I think we owe the fallen in those wars at least a show of respect.

I love Cinco de Mayo. First of course, there's the food. I love it. But the entire thing is fun. If you're in the right place.

The best Cinco de Mayo I've ever had was in 2002. We were in San Antonio. Niks and I were on one of our long road trips. My sister Doris and her husband flew to San Antonio and met us there.

I scanned some photos of Doris and me in our sombreros at the Mexican Market there, but you think I could get them to upload to blogger? Noooooo. Sh*t. That blogger.

I guess they're too large.

All I can say is you missed a real treat.

Of course we toured The Alamo and all that good stuff.

Doris especially wanted to see Ft. Sam Houston again. She spent a year there when she was 18.

Only Doris and I knew why it was so important to her. That Doris. Rascal.

She was terminally ill at the time of this visit to old San Antone. But she still had a couple of years left. She and I spent much of that time together.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Have a drink on me and Doris.

Ol' Hoss is gone to see Big Ernie

Lowell Gene Maudlin, born on both Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, 1930, died on March 10, 2009. Gene died utilizing Oregon’s Death with Dignity plan.

Guess that's why he stopped answering my e-mails inquiring as to his health.

He wrote his own obituary and this is the last line. “Maudlin plans to be cremated and then will reincarnate.” He often wrote about making his "pile" so that he could afford to be frozen until he could reincarnate.

Yep. It's officially cold outside

It's cold. If I'm cold, it's officially cold. I don't mind cold weather and seldom bother with a real coat. I generally just put on a jacket, if that.

But at least we got a nice little snow last night. Looks pretty. It's not a problem snow, it's a light snow. Light as in not wet. Wet snow is less fun. Unless. Unless you're making snowmen and snowballs. Wet snow is very good for those things.

For those of you, and you know who you are, who hate snow, please look at this picture below and think about how lucky you are here in the land of not-much-snow.

Imagine opening your door and seeing this! That snow.

Global warming?

I definitely believe in global warming. I don't see how it can be denied.

There will be winners and losers in global warming, and right here in PA we seem to be among the losers. We used to get honest-to-goodness snow. Big, nice snows. And yet. Some didn't like snow*.

I wonder if they love what has replaced the snow? The ice storms. We used to go years and years and years without an ice storm. Now we get them instead of snow. You can drive in snow. You can walk in snow. But driving and walking in even a thin layer of ice is dangerous.

Not that I'm complainin' of course. I never bitch. Well, maybe a little.

*I forgive all those who don't like snow. I know that they like ice even less. And for all who love Spring (and who doesn't?) as of today, it's 72 days away. Do easy time. Try to enjoy winter. The ice is beautiful on the trees after all.

Hoo boy. It's almost Christmas and I'm not ready. Just finally hung a wreath today.

I do love Christmas lights and such, but I'm sooooo lazy!

I "adopt" a needy family each Christmas and I have at least finished that shopping. It's actually easier to shop for people you don't know.

Friends and I took a bus trip to Longwood Gardens last Friday. That place is beautiful all year, but at Christmas it is a really special treat.

They decorate to the max. But it's tasteful just the same.

I wish you could see it.

Another Sale, another Thanksgiving

Most every day when my husband or I bring in the mail, we say to the other, "Penney's is having a sale!!!!"

Each day's mail brings a flyer from J.C. Penny's.
That store is always having a sale. Is there a day when there is no sale on at Penney's?

This wonderful item was originally $34.99 -- Now it's only $19.99! Things are always ONLY. In my opinion, it's not only $19.99, it's $19.99 plus tax. There's no "only" in a price.

One of their recent mailings had this great Marshmallow Blaster which uses air pressure to blast marshmallows up to 40'! Think of it! Forty feet! BUT, the marshmallows are not included. Bummer.

Is there someone you know and ~~hate~~ love who has small kids? Get'em this blaster. It'd be wonderful to have marshmallows all over the house, wouldn't it? They'd draw ants and stuff. Good times.

I don't mean to pick on Penney's. I think I get a bunch of flyers from them because I shop there a lot. I'm pretty cheap.

Now instead of political ads on TV, we have toy ads for Christmas. I think I like the toys better, but I'm not positive. Toy ads are pretty obnoxious.

YES! I am so happy. I know that they will start pickin' on him tomorrow, but just let me be happy today!

At the same time, I'm plenty pissed at California and Florida for voting against giving gay people the same civil rights as they themselves have.

But I was born and reared in the deep south. I drank out of water fountains that said, "Whites only." And it was against the law to be gay. AGAINST THE LAW! Gay men were put in jail for being gay! (I never heard of lesbians being jailed, but that's because if there's no dick involved, it's not sex, right?)

So I do not lose hope. I will not lose hope.

My Obama yard sign is stolen nightly. That's okay. I go daily and get a new one. No problem. I contribute to his campaign fund each time, so maybe it's for the best.

It's a bit scary, however, to think that thieves visit my yard at night. They come onto my property, and steal from me. Sad. If you pray, perhaps you could pray for them.

Another sign of the time, a happier sign, is how beautiful it is here in the autumn.

Since I visit the Obama headquarters on my side of the river so often, I'll be working there today. Things work out, no?

It's that time of year when you start getting free calendars from your hair stylist, your congressperson, the mechanic, and so on.

But of course, you can buy a calendar to support a cause.

Julieanne Smolinski writes that "Men on a Mission, a calendar of shirtless Mormon missionaries, was created last year by Chad Hardy, a former missionary and Brigham Young University grad. Chad claims the calendars, the sale of which go to assorted charities, are meant to de-mythologize Mormon sexuality and promote understanding between religions (because nipples are the universal language)." That Julieanne. I think I like her. (Poor ol' Chad was excommunicated.)

These mortuary guys donate two bucks from each sale to breast cancer. Makes me sorry that I had my Mama cremated. These hunks coulda dug her grave. Sob.

The Naked Fishermen have a calendar too. Some sorta "save the fish" thingie I guess. Yeah. Save the fish from drowning. You do that by removing them from the water. Like that.

And of course, you have the ever-popular naked chef stuff:

Personally, I'd want to know if a net was used before I tasted that....food.

Now this one is just disturbing. DISTURBING.

The bare naked clowns give their money to Multiple Sclerosis, which is a wonderful cause. Their calendar features clowns "in a myriad of positions designed to delight...." And answers questions such as "Who’s bendy like a gummy bear?"

Scary. Interesting. But mostly scary.

These men took it off their old bodies to raise money for their local schools.

Bean Soup

My good friend Leah has wanted for years to go to the Bean Soup Festival in McClure. That Leah. Seems that years and years ago, a mutual friend, Bob S., told her that the soup at this festival is the best bean soup he ever tasted. Please note that his initials are BS.

Good ol' Bob is now in an Alzheimer's unit in a nursing home, but never mind. Back in the day, he was a well-respected school principal. Better respected by Leah and my husband Niks than by me. I always figured that a man who had been married three times had some issues with taste, if you know what I mean.

Anyway this festival is to hell and gone and out in the middle of nowhere. I still can't explain where the heck it is. On the way there, we saw this:

Can you read what it says? It reads, "Deer Hide Drop Bin." You know you are in the deep country when there are deer hide drop bins.

Anyhoo, you also know that if a tiny town has had a Bean Soup Festival for 118 years that bean soup is going to be the very best bean soup in the entire known world. I mean, it's not a SOUP festival, it's a BEAN soup festival. They know how to make bean soup.

One might think that, in fact, they make more than one type of bean soup. Like that. But no. They make ONE bean soup. So, must be absolutely perfect bean soup.

You guys. Such fools. Like Leah, Niks and me.

The bean soup at the McClure Bean Soup festival is the absolute WORST bean soup any of us had ever eaten. Or not eaten as in the case of Leah and me. Niks will eat anything apparently. The three of us searched diligently and never found one bean in the three bowls of soup that we had between us. No ham either.

At the pulled-pork sandwich stand where Leah and I went to buy something, anything, to get the taste of the bean soup out of our mouths, the women there told us that yes, indeed, the bean soup is the worst in the world, year after year. The cooks don't use many beans and they cook them until they disappear. They don't use any ham or ham stock or a ham bone. They use hamburg meat and suet. SUET! I'm going to be sick!

They have a queen at this little festival. We saw her in person. She's young, so she still has a few teeth. Leah and I thought we might count the total teeth at the festival to amuse ourselves, but finally decided we might as well count heads. 'Bout the same thing. The runner-up to the queen was prettier than the queen, so I guess the contest was fixed. But it is hard to pick the best between three young ladies. Some might call the runner-up, "next to last." I'm glad they don't do that.

Here's a picture of Niks and me to prove that we were there! At the BEAN SOUP FESTIVAL. We can check that off our bucket list.

My daughter Actonbell says I have to "take down" the post below because it's not her birthday now. That girl. So pushy. Not so much. Generally.

I've been doing a lot of stuff, but I don't feel like writing it out, so I'll just post some funny pictures instead.

This game is probably called Chicken. I've heard about people playing Chicken, but didn't realize that it involved actual chickens. Who knew?

I've got nothing against cops...but then it's always fun to laugh at them. You know it's true.

This is my husband Niks. He's inside the State Capitol Building in Salem, Oregon. It's a Sunday. The Capitol Building is not open on Sundays. But I found a door that wasn't locked. Of course, I had to try a lot of doors before I found one out-of-the-way door that was unlocked, but it was unlocked. I did not break into the building. Notice the look of terror on his face? He was sooooo afraid that we would be arrested! That Niks. Now that's chicken.

Well, it's just about the dead middle of summer. Personally I like spring and fall and winter better than summer, but I do like summer anyway.

So many festivals! My friend Leah just called me and asked me if I want to go to the McClure Bean Soup Festival. That Leah.

Of course I said yes. It's not until September. I have time to buy some Beano©. Besides September is a very nice month here.

Notice that it's not just a soup festival. It's a BEAN soup festival. I'm amazed and intrigued.

Meanwhile I've been to Roots Farmers' Market (Here you say Ruts Market.) with somebody (whoever you are you are very important to me....) and to the Saturday Market with daughter Actonbell, and to the Green Dragon Market with walking buddy Irene. I'm having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.

I'm eating all too well.

It's Cinco de Mayo! My best Cinco de Mayo was in 2002. That year my husband and I were staying in San Antonio TX for eight days, including May 5. My sister Doris and her husband Michael flew in to spend that time with us there. It was a most excellent visit.

I can't find the pictures right now. But we spent the 5th in the big Mexican Market and there were dancers very much like the ones above.

Doris was already in the last stages of her cancer, but she and I did so much together in San Antonio. Only she and I knew why we chose to meet there. I'm glad I was able to help her visit some of the places that had been important to her when she was very young and in the army there.

I miss her, but I'm smiling as I write this.

I'm sure that you've seen this before, but I'm sick so you can just see it again. Or not. See if I care.

I have to scrub the top of every can I open because Oprah has taught me that they have fecal matter and salmonella on them. Some body out there is not washing his hands.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time. She should hurry that up.

I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates/ Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program. Old Bill owes me a bunch of interest on that money. I've been waiting a while...

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me, and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish. Except for the wish to have money and to get over this damn cold.

I'm not supposed to eat at KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers. But I don't eat the eyes and feathers anyway.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day. Just get over it and give me some space.

Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers get answered only if I forward an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes. Maybe I don't have any friends? Don't my acquaintances count?

Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. This didn't work for me. Did you know that you actually can BUY products to clean your toilet? Don't drink them either.

I no longer can buy gasoline without taking someone along to watch the car so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas. I take another person along to make sure that the first person doesn't use her cell phone and cause the gas pump to go up in flames.

I no longer drink Dr.Pepper since the people who make it are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans. You all know that I'm a big ol' atheist myself. My cousin Jimmy told me when I was a kid, that Dr. Pepper is actually prune juice, so that's why I don't drink it.

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer. I use a generic wrap. I've never been warned about those.

And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave anymore because it will blow up in my face...disfiguring me for life. My figure is so dissed at this point...my face is all I have left.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with an infected needle. Or I wouldn't if I knew there were pay phones left in the world. Ever see a pay phone? Anybody?

I'm not supposed to go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me. Or at least smell me up real bad.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise. Well, if the guy is cute and wearing shorts, heck, I'm opening the darn door.

I've been told not shop at Target since they are French and don't support our American troops or the Salvation Army. Right. I believe that.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore and Uzbekistan. And I'm way too stupid to just say "no."

I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their recipe. And a thousand other recipes received in e-mails. As if. I'm keepin' my stove clean, baby, CLEAN. Besides, I gave my money to that slow-to-die Penny babe.

Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it bites my butt. Shudder. Why the hell is that spider after me anyway? There are lots of other asses out there.

And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 I dropped in the parking lot because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting underneath my car to grab my leg. Twenty bucks maybe. But what could I buy with $5 anyway?

I shouldn't drive my car because I can't buy gas from certain gas companies! I can't remember which they are, so....

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician...

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Harvey the computer guy, to come over. Harvey clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. He gave me a bill for a minimum service call.

As he was walking away, I called after him, "So, what was wrong?"

He replied, "It was an ID ten T error."

I didn't want to appear stupid, but I had to ask, "An, ID ten T error? What's that .. in case I need to fix it again?"

Harvey grinned.... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?"

"Nope," I said.

Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Mary.

He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.

Managing not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood.

He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed.

In the morning, Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room.

She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?"

Flynn said, "Why you say such a mean thing?"

"Well," Mary said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror." That Flynn.

At long last, a nice little snow

I took the picture above this morning. It's the front sideyard of our yard. We had a nice little snow. No big deal, but all the South Central PA schools are closed today. I guess because we're expecting a worse storm during the day. I call chicken on that for our own little district. I think it's Friday and the teachers wanted off.

Our Borough is approximately a mile and a half square in size, and we don't bus any kids to school. They could have easily gotten in a half day. The beauty of that would have been that it counts for a whole day. And that would mean a longer Spring break. I know that my grandtwins didn't want a cancellation. Coupla geeks. They're in the Model UN at Penn State University which was to continue on through today and tomorrow. They hate not to be doing that. Nice girls they are.

Eye candy

Libby commented that I live close to Hershey PA and Chocolate World. I sure do! The day after Valentine's Day (or VD as some call it, or maybe it's a day to catch it, I forget), my friend Leah and I went out to Hershey and took the tour again. There's a display there now featuring dresses made from various Hershey products. Some use wrappers and some use the candy itself! Whoa! There's a Twizzler dress! I wish I had thought to take pictures. But you can view them yourself, if you want, by going to the Hershey's Project Runway: Eye Candy site. I've linked it above.

They are actually going to auction these dresses for a charity. Twizzlers aren't my very favorite, but let's face it: if I bought it, I'd eat it. Cheaper to buy a pack of Twizzlers.

There are all kinds of shops there, called shoppes, where you can buy soooooooo much candy.

It's snowing! I do love a snow day. I'm retired so it doesn't mean that much, but I can't help but love snow.

'Course it will turn into ice and sleet later today, and I'm sorry for all who are forced to drive in that kind of mess.

But keep in mind: It's not my fault. I get to love it. I don't make the stuff myself.

Fat Tuesday

February 5 is Strove Tuesday, or in south central Pennsylvania, it's Fausnaught Day! Yum yum.

Bet ya can't eat just one.

Pennsylvania has more "days" than anyplace else I've ever heard of. We're always looking for some excuse to eat.

Anyway, everyone, and I do mean everyone, eats at least one fausnaught on Fausnaught Day.

Some of us are having a bad-hair day 'cause the Patriots lost the Super Bowl.

But it could be worse. Much worse.

Having your team lose a big football game is bad enough, but to go through life looking like a prick with buck teeth can't be easy.

Punxsutawney Phil Says Six More Weeks of Winter!

'Course, if you live in South Central PA, you wonder if winter ever started at all.

Phil's official forecast as read 2/2/08 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:

Here Ye! Here Ye! Here Ye!

On Gobbler's Knob on this fabulous Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2008 Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators, Rose to the call of President Bill Cooper and greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths.

After casting a weathered eye toward thousands of his faithful followers, Phil consulted with President Cooper and directed him to the appropriate scroll, which proclaimed:
"As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be!"

You will note that last year there was a wonderful amount of snow. This year it's just been ice and rain. Yuk.

I believe the Prognostication because I know how much thought and care that rodent puts into his forecast.

Maybe next year AP3 will be able to go with me. She's never seen the hog and all the fun. And believe me, it is fun! Two years ago when my husband Niks and I went up and stayed a couple of days, on the way up to the knob on the school bus, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the winter, in the middle of the woods, I asked him, "How do you rate this as among the craziest things we've ever done?"

He said, "About five I think." Huh? There were four crazier things we've done? That Niks. Four crazier things? Ya think maybe that's the four kids we had?
